Is now the right time to start planning for your wedding hair?  You might have just gotten engaged and you think the dress is the first thing you need to decide upon—you might be mistaken in your priorities.  You may think it’s too early to start planning for your September wedding but Celebrity Colourist Michael Canale suggests starting focusing on your colour now.

Lives of Style: When do you start working with clients who are planning for their Big Day?

Michael: About six to nine months before a wedding. It’s important to meet with my client and their stylist so that we can start moving colour. It’s especially important if you are a brunette and want to go blonde. Then, after you have picked your dress we can talk about how you want to wear your hair. And I adjust the colour to the hairstyle.

Lives of Style: What is the process like?

Michael: Usually my clients want to go blonder – 90% want to go lighter – and most brunettes want accent highlighting for movement and updo’s.  Six months before, I gradually move the colour to the hue that my clients desire. And two weeks before we do a final run through, they will show me a picture from their hair stylist’s trial run and then I will place the highlights accordingly so that the highlights perfectly accent their hair style.

Lives of Style: What type of accents do you do with highlighting?

Michael: I like do highlights around the face–and then, there is a certain style of highlighting for updos, or for enhancing hair if it is going to be worn down or in a side lift. It’s all tailored, so it is a couture look for the wedding.

Lives of Style: What do you suggest to keep a bride’s hair extra healthy and shiny when moving colour?

Michael: A lot of people like to use my vitamin line, Replenish, to prep for a wedding to get their hair strong and healthy. It is a new vegan approach that has all you need for healthy hair.  My vitamin foam, Nourish, is formulated with antioxidants and vitamins that promote natural hair growth and strengthens the integrity of the cuticle for stronger hair which improves the ability for the hair to hold colour. Also, using my conditioner, Soften, will help strengthen my clients hair as I move my clients colour getting ready for the wedding.  My conditioner is perfect for prepping highlights or maintaining the condition of the hair after colour treatment.
