Our Lives of Style Authority: Master Colourist to the Stars: Michael Canale–in the business for over 30 years, is renowned for creating natural sun-streaked hair and classic blonde shades that get raves.

One of Hollywood’s most sought-after colourists, Canale’s clients have included movie star royalty like Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Heidi Klum, Carolyn Murphy, Carmen Electra, Denise Richards and more.

Canale is a staple on Allure’s “Best of the Best” as a superior hair colourist who “lightens blondes to a baby-like perfection.”

Lives of Style:  If a new client comes to you and she has gone overboard with her hair color and it is now too brassy, how can you tone it down?

Michael:  To solve that problem, I would use a color bath. Since Canale Salon is known for correction, brassiness can only be corrected permanently by removing it.  Highlights are the best correction and then it is essential to tone it properly.  I am known for creating the “color bath,” a permanent blending technique that allows me to control the color. It’s a specific mix that I personalize for each client so everyone gets a bespoke color. It was one of my first correctional color techniques that I made mainstream. We do this after the highlights.  Then you will have beautiful looking hair.

Lives of Style:  If a new client wants to go blonde, how do you decide what a good blonde would look like on her?

Michael: A lot of women want to brighten up their hair color in time for Spring–now that the sun is out and the weather is warmer.  The way to go blonde with the best possible results is to start going blonde and every time I highlight I move the color blonder until I get our desired “blonde” look.  My technique makes my clients hair color look more blended from root to end, darker to lighter and it shouldn’t be done in one process.  I don’t want to damage my client’s hair by over coloring so we move our clients in stages to reach that perfect blonde.
