Stylish “Song-birds”

LoS Madonna

Since the introduction of lightning-fast internet, microblogging and smart phones, news is available for public consumption seconds after its real-time occurrence.

Unfortunately, in Hollywood, that means girls in the limelight are under constant scrutiny. One sartorial misstep and blogosphere goes wild.

Whereas singers were once evaluated solely on their musical abilities, the age of information has added a new dimension to their once-simpler role. These days, performers are expected to be trend-setters with a signature style.

With the 54th Annual Grammy Awards right around the corner, we decided to highlight a few of our favorite singers with style. While we love these ladies first for their beautiful voices and catchy songs, their fashion sensibilities come in at a close second.

Queen of Pop, Madonna has long been hailed as the mother of many current trends in both music and fashion. From rosaries to cone bras, Madonna pushed the envelope and blazed the trail for a new generation of pop singers. Pop’s Princess, Lady Gaga, has carried on the Queen’s legacy in many respects. The talented singer-songwriter works with her design team, Haus of Gaga, to create her eye-catching outfits. Whether she’s wearing a dress of plastic, meat or haute couture, there’s no denying Lady Gaga’s talent extends far beyond her music.

Barbadian beauty Rihanna has grown from a teen to a woman in the public eye so her style evolution is well-documented. Unlike her mini-skirt and tank top beginnings, today she’s photographed in It-girl brands like Alexander Wang, Opening Ceremony and Cushnie et Ochs. Best friend Katy Perry takes a more playful approach to fashion – often adorned in animals, fruit or desserts. While not everyone can pull-off a cookie-print latex dress, Perry is just sweet enough to make it work.

Christina Aguilera and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie are two artists who move seamlessly between retro and racy looks. Since her style reinvention in 2006 for her Back to Basics album, Aguilera has embraced a more glamorous, refined style, eschewing her Dirrty past. As the only female member of her group, Fergie often turned up the sex appeal for her stage performances. But at the December premier of husband Josh Duhamel’s New Year’s Eve, the singer looked every bit the starlet she is.
