Eyes on Their Rise: Cushnie et Ochs

Cushnie et Ochs

Just like Badgley Mischka, Lazaro and Jack and the Mulleavy sisters before them, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs are a match made in fashion heaven. Their clothes, for the lack of a more fitting descriptor, are so cool. Sleek, tailored silhouettes and strategically-designed cut-outs lend an edge to Cushnie et Ochs’s flattering, wearable pieces.

The young designers met while studying at Parsons and quickly became stand-outs among their classmates. With highly coveted internships at Donna Karan, Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi and Chado Ralph Rucci between them, Cushnie et Ochs has roots in some of the most renowned fashion houses in the world. If that alone didn’t predict big things for Carly and Michelle, certainly their awards for runner-up and Designer of the Year, respectively, in their graduating class, set them on the path to success.

These days the talented twosome is never short on praise or recognition. After selling their first collection to Bergdorf Goodman in 2009, they were recipients of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund award the same year. Features in Vogue, W and numerous other prestigious publications garnered a great deal of recognition for Cushnie et Ochs and famous fans like Michelle Obama, Rihanna, and Reese Witherspoon have lent their celebrity to the growth of the brand. In 2011, Carly and Michelle were CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund top ten finalists, an honor they share with design greats like Prabal Gurung, Derek Lam and Thakoon.

If their first three years are any indication, this up-and-coming duo is headed for great heights and the coolest clientele. Stay tuned – we interview Carly and Michelle at their Fall 2012 show in two weeks!
