Shock and Awe — Angelina Jolie Wows in Atelier Versace

There was one grande dame movie star on the stage tonight at the Oscar’s, and it wasn’t Meryl Steep–it was Angelina Jolie.

When Jolie–who was presenting awards for screenwriting–sailed across the proscenium, stood at the microphone and kicked out her leg beyond the thigh-high slit of her Atelier Versace strapless black gown, the audience gasped. You could even hear it outside of the auditorium. Jolie owned the stage. She also owned the night. Now we know why Kelly Osborne calls her “the Queen.” Jolie laughed–and kicked out her leg again–twice. Other celebrities may have shone in their gowns, but Angelina is more than an actress and director–she’s almost singlehandedly bringing back old-time, glamorous, bigger-than-life star-wattage to Hollywood.

Tonight’s choice was both a continuation of Jolie’s relationship with Versace–she also wore an Atelier Versace gown to the Golden Globes–and a refreshing change from recent long-sleeved, more conservative dresses. And while Jolie rocked a Romona Keveza gown at the premier of “In The Land of Blood and Honey,” and shone twice in Jenny Packham, the real stardom with Angelina is the way she walks, talks, stands, smiles, speaks and frankly, just “presents” like a big-time movie star.

Jolie–one of the most physically beautiful women in the world–comes from a long line of “It” factor glamorous girls, most notably style-divas like Elizabeth Taylor–who certainly knew how to make an entrance in her day–and before that Greta Garbo–nicknamed “the face.”

Jolie’s decisions about hair, make-up, gowns, accessories–and how to make an entrance–have made acolytes of a number of Hollywood’s famous names like Molly Sims and Kim Kardashian. Here are a few Jolie scene-stealers:

1-Frame your best assets. Go with big, luxurious hair or “pulled-back-for-drama” upsweep. Tonight it was the hair–lightened just a bit.
2-Double trouble. You CAN play up both eyes and lips–Angelina’s gone for smoky eyes and bright red lips tonight
3-Less is more. Let star-wattage speak. Angelina never piles on extraneous jewelry
4-Posture dips not allowed; elevate your head and chin and look slightly down for pics
5-Walk regally–move like a star–even climbing stairs
6-Smile serenely at the crowd–and hold up a hand to wave
7- Own–don’t “vamp on”–the red carpet. Don’t do the “starlet-two-hands-on-the-hips” posturing. Use one if you have to. Better yet, keep hands near hips with palms turned softly inward.

Finally–know that a great look is only half of a winning appearance–you have to know how to work it.
