Trend Report: Who’s Buying What this Holiday Season

Happy Holidays

Can’t decide what to get the loved ones in your life this holiday season?

Many consumers are choosing to purchase gift cards or certificates so that their friends and family can shop for themselves. That way recipients have the freedom to choose what they want from their favorite vendor. As most gift cards are easily accessible by check-out registers in stores or on-line, it’s very convenient for a last-minute gift.

A recent consumer survey conducted by Deloitte & Touche found that 43% of those sampled planned on doing just that–purchasing gift cards or gift certificates this year, beating out clothing (42% of respondents) by a nose as the most popular gift idea.

With immensely popular new gaming consoles Playstation 4 and Xbox One, along with new product releases from ever-popular Apple, it’s no surprise that electronics came in as the third most popular at 32%.

Closely following technology are ever-reliable, old school entertainment: books, coming it at 30%; and games, toys and dolls (27%). Food and liquor (27%) and CD’s & DVD’s or Blu Rays for
movies or music (24%) closely follow.

Interestingly, non-clothing gifts primarily targeted for women fall in the lower percentages, such as cosmetics/fragrances/health & beauty aids (19%) and jewelry (18%).

When asked what they would most like to receive, the most popular response was cash. 37% of those surveyed declared that they would appreciate it if their loved ones skipped shopping altogether and put cash under the tree. And fully 27% of the sample group followed this concept and actually did.

Whether you are planning to brave the holiday shopping crowds or keep it simple with a gift card or cash, embrace the gift of giving this holiday season.
