On 3 September—the eve of New York Fashion WeekCarolina Herrera will be honoured with the 2014 Artistry of Fashion Award by the Couture Council of the Museum at FIT–the Fashion Institute of Technology. This year’s luncheon chairs will be Julie Macklowe and Elizabeth Musmanno.

It’s most “fitting,”—forgive the pun, that the iconic designer, a Red Carpet favourite who launched her namesake brand 34 years ago–who has dressed first ladies, royalty, socialites and fashionistas everywhere, is being lauded for her artistry.

Venezuelan-American designer and renowned beauty—she graced the cover of Vogue seven times—Herrera grew up in privilege, attending Balenciaga runway shows in Paris with her grandmother, and wearing designs by Dior and Lanvin. She was encouraged by then-Vogue editor Diana Vreeland to design her own line. Throughout the years, Herrera has seamlessly married her dual fashion and societal sensibilities into an elegant, au courant yet timeless line that endures based on its artistry.

Herrera, who is married to once-titled Spanish aristocrat Reinaldo Herrera, has counted Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as a client—Herrera designed the wedding dress for Caroline Kennedy–and counts a bevy of Hollywood celebrities, including Rene Zellweger as fans.

She has received numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), CFCA’s Womenswear Designer of the Year, Fashion Group International Superstar Award, Gold Medal from Queen Sofia Spanish Institute and Style Awards Designer of the Year.

This benefit luncheon will be at the David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center. Past recipients include Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, and Karl Lagerfield.
