New York Fashion Week–Why We Love Badgley Mischka

Badgley Mischka Fall Winter 2014

We at Lives of Style love a good collaboration between brilliant designers, and Badgley Mischka takes the prize in terms of high-fashion teamwork.

From the time Mark Badgley and James Mischka joined forces in 1988 to create glamorous, stylish, and wearable eveningwear and accessories they have made Badgley Mischka the go-to-brand for chic, fabulous fashionistas.

“Our style harks back to the glamorous Hollywood of the Forties,” says Mischka. “The Badgley Mischka signature style is simple, streamlined and thoroughly elegant.”

The two designers construct their pieces from rare and beautiful fabrics to highlight fine craftsmanship. Not only that, but this dynamic duo has mastered the art of creating concomitant, visual interest in their looks–either in the silhouette or with luxurious detail–so it is not hard to see how Badgley Mischka has remained integral in the fashion industry for almost 25 years.

Celebrities from Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Eva Longoria, Catherine Zeta Jones have worn Badgley Mischka.

Their past Resort Collection—inspired by Tahiti and Bora Bora, featured tropical flowers, leaf and sand inspired outfits, as well as island-inspired color palettes that pervade the sultry and sophisticated collection.

Considering how both Mischka and Badgley relish gowns, they showed admirable restraint in not plunging immediately into red carpet wear, but instead integrated Tahitian daywear, including pants, into the collection.

And as for Mischka’s signature ruffled skirts? “There’s not a ruffle in sight,” Mischka told WWD.

With sumptuous looks, silhouettes were simplified and pre-adorned–gowns sporting their own embellishments—letting the piece speak for itself rather than having to fight with accessories for the spotlight.

We met the illustrious pair four years ago during a lighthearted moment at Fashion’s Night Out at Bergdorf Goodman in New York—and we were impressed—not only with fantastic costumes they designed for their two dachshunds for a “Pet Fashion Show,” but with the energy, commitment and creativity they put toward everything they do.

In subsequent Fashion Week interviews and meetings, and even when attending their Twitter Party a few years back, we realized over and over again just how wonderful Mark and James are—we can’t wait for New York Fashion Week again—and to be in awe of their divine designs and sophisticated approach.

We have no doubt that their Spring-Summer 2015 collection will turn heads.
