New York Fashion Week — Why We Love Prabal Gurung

Neimans Prabal Gurung Personal Appearance

We first met the inimitable Prabal Gurung several years ago–at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco—and fell in love with his aesthetic, talent and frankly—his modesty.

He had just designed a dress for First Lady Michelle Obama—and he was gratified for—the people of Nepal.

Since that time, with every new collection we’ve seen, he’s broadened and furthered his brand—elevating his creativity and design to new heights, while keeping that balanced—very “cool” outlook on life.

Gurung—who became an American citizen in 2013, was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal.

After beginning his design career in New Delhi, he moved to New York to finish his studies at Parsons The New School for Design, during which time he interned for Donna Karan.

Upon graduating, Gurung spent two years with Cynthia Rowley’s design and production teams. Soon after, he was appointed Design Director at the iconic Bill Blass brand, a post he held for five years until launching his own collection in February 2009.

Gurung understands a woman’s body—and admixes both classic elegance and innovation in design. His clothes are artful, flattering and very wearable. And they make a statement.

Gurung found inspiration in the multi-faceted, on-the-go woman, and included twists on closet classics, including color-blocked chunky sweaters, ruffled tailored pantsuits, and printed eveningwear.

He’s got a devoted red-carpet following of celebrities, including Blake Lively, Carey Mulligan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zoe Saldana, Amanda Seyfried—and scores more. January Jones made a statement in his red dress for the Emmy’s.

Even as he creates waves in fashion, Gurung also effortlessly creates across multiple design fronts.

Gurung hopes to one day open a flagship store in New York, Gurung imagines that “[My customer] walks in, and it’s a one-stop shop.”

On the way, Gurung has partnered with MAC in his first foray into color cosmetics.

The 14-piece collection—launching 26 November, includes everything from lipglasses to shadows to lipsticks– all in vintage-inspired tubes.

Gurung told WWD the packaging was as important to him as the colors themselves. “This package holds a lot of emotions. I can’t wait to give [the collection] to my mom,” he says. Gurung’s mother was the catalyst for his love of beauty and fashion, and he recalls watching her put on makeup when he was younger.

For the media and fashion insiders attending New York Fashion Week in a few days, Gurung is providing a sneak-peak preview during his upcoming show.

In the future, Gurung said he hopes to dive further into the beauty industry with a fragrance and more color cosmetics.

With everything on his plate taking shape—we can see real results in Gurung’s garnering of a global clientele.

Now, with New York Fashion Week on the horizon—Gurung is slated for another home run.
